Foundations

What AI actually is, demystified in plain clinical language.

Posts in this pillar answer: what does this actually mean?

Most surgeons encounter AI through vendor presentations, press releases, or conversations with colleagues — none of which are designed to give you a working mental model of what these tools actually do. The Foundations pillar fills that gap.

These posts start from clinical scenarios and work backwards to the underlying concepts. The aim is not to make you a technical expert. It is to give you the vocabulary and judgement to evaluate AI claims, ask the right questions, and understand what you’re actually looking at when someone says their product “uses machine learning” or achieves “98% accuracy”.

For trainees

Build the conceptual grounding you need for interviews, portfolio reflections, and confident conversations about AI in your department. These are the posts to read before everything else on the site.

For consultants

Develop the framework to interrogate AI claims from industry, evaluate procurement decisions, and supervise trainees who are already engaging with these tools in clinical practice.
